6 Questions with Shane Skinner, Co-Founder of Record360
1. First of all, can you tell us a little about your role and what you do at Record360?
I am the Co-founder and CEO of Record360, leading all areas of the business including strategy, business development, and finance. I’m responsible for day-to-day decisions on the business and implementing the company’s short- and long-term plans.
2. Can you tell us a little about your go to market strategy, current growth/marketing channels are working for you right now?
Our goal is to address a seemingly unsolvable issue: Property gets rented. Property gets damaged. Responsible parties aren’t held accountable for damage. Or damage claims are made when the user did not actually damage the asset.
This problem causes unnecessary disputes that significantly tarnish customer experiences, leads to millions lost in un-collectible damages, creates anxiety and conflict for all parties, and wastes countless hours pursuing needless claims.
Just as DocuSign has transformed transaction management, growing into a $1.6 billion company in the process, Record360 is positioned to revolutionize the property condition reporting process and become a go-to resource for property-handling companies across numerous industries in the years to come.
Every day, billions of dollars’ worth of property is rented, shared, loaned, leased, borrowed, or bought.
Companies specializing in everything from car rental to equipment rental to property management complete thousands of these transactions each year, meaning thousands of reports documenting the condition of the property at the time it is handed over to or returned by customers.
When we say property documentation is a billion-dollar market, we mean a billion-dollar market. Here are just a few of the industries where documenting property condition plays a central role:
Body shops, equipment rental, vehicle rental, car dealerships, shipping, moving, towing, construction and property management.
3. What is the biggest mistake you have made with Record360 so far that other founders can learn from?
There are significant benefits of bringing on experienced, accomplished leadership but it also comes with a price including dilution and sometimes they lack the ability to roll up their sleeves on the more day-to-day tasks needed in the early days of a start-up.
4. Let’s talk you… what apps, blogs, and tools can’t you live without?
Yelp, I love it. I use it for just about every restaurant or retail store selection.
5. What’s your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?
I consider myself an expert in the area of time management, efficiency, and effectiveness and have even taught classes on the topics at prior employers.
A basic rule in time management is to follow the 3 D’s when handling inbound objectives and tasks – Do It, Delegate It, or Dump It.
6. What resource have you watched/read/listened to that’s had the biggest impact on your business/life so far this year, and why?
The biggest resource that’s impacted by business/life so far this year is the group of advisors that I’ve assembled earlier in the year to help ensure Record360’s success.
I’m very fortunate to have a group of folks that are accomplished, experienced, and genuinely good people to bounce strategic ideas.
My most coveted advisor passed away earlier in the month which has created a big void as he developed into a life mentor and good friend as well.
